What Is License Plate Renewal in New Jersey?
License plate renewal in New Jersey extends the existing registration for another year. Your license plate and physical plates remain in place. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission issues a new registration certificate and windshield sticker.
- New passenger vehicles receive a four-year initial registration under N.J.S.A. 39:3-4. Annual renewal begins after this first period ends.
- Renewal is not a title transaction. Ownership changes require a separate title transfer at an MVC agency.
- Passenger vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, and non-commercial trucks all renew on the same annual cycle. Trailers have a fixed expiration date of March 31 regardless of the purchase month.
- Each registration expires on the owner’s calendar birthday in the 12th month after the last renewal date. Leased vehicles expire on the last day of that month.
When Do You Need To Renew Your New Jersey License Plate?
NJMVC sends a renewal notice approximately three months before your registration expires. This notice includes a nine-digit PIN required for online renewal.
- Renewal opens as soon as you receive the notice, roughly three months before expiration. A separate early window restriction does not apply.
- New Jersey does not offer a grace period after expiration. Driving a vehicle with an expired registration is a violation under N.J.S.A. 39:3-4, subject to a fine of up to $100.
- The state does not impose a separate administrative late fee on the renewal fee itself. You pay the same amount for registration whether you renew on time or after expiration.
- Vehicle inspections occur on a biennial cycle, independent of registration renewal, so a current inspection sticker is not required at renewal. The NJ MVC inspection program operates on its own two-year schedule.
The fee distribution in the cost section below applies at each annual renewal.
How To Renew Your License Plate in New Jersey
Confirm your insurance is active and you have your renewal notice before choosing a channel. NJMVC offers three paths: online, in person, or by mail.
- Online renewal through MyMVC is the fastest path. Enter your nine-digit PIN, verify insurance and address, pay by credit or debit card, and the renewal takes effect immediately.
- Registrations not eligible for online renewal require an in-person visit. Schedule through the NJMVC appointment portal, bring your renewal notice, insurance card, ID, and completed BA-49 form. The agency accepts cash, checks, money orders, and cards.
- For mail renewal, complete both sides of the renewal notice and send it in the return envelope with a check or money order made out to NJMVC. Allow two to three weeks to receive the new registration.
- If your renewal notice is lost, request a replacement PIN through the MyMVC PIN request page before proceeding online.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in New Jersey?
Most passenger vehicles, motorcycles, recreational boats, and trailers weighing up to 55,000 pounds can renew through MyMVC at mymvc.state.nj.us. The portal accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Renewal takes effect upon transaction completion, and new registration documents arrive by mail within 7-14 days.
Vehicles with registration codes not included in the list of eligible codes, or registrations previously suspended, must renew in person at an MVC agency by appointment. NJMVC operates agencies in all 21 counties.
- The mail renewal package should include the completed renewal notice (front and back) and a check or money order made out to NJMVC, sent in the return envelope provided with the notice.
- A separate return address envelope is not required; MVC sends the new registration to the address on file.
Online renewal is the cheapest and fastest path where possible; agency appointments handle what the portal cannot.
